<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&quot;;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: &quot;Century Gothic&quot;;">I have just described exactly what&#8221; surprise&#8221; does to a person who is unaware and who is suddenly and unexpectedly confronted by a predator.<span> </span></span></p>

<p align="center">
<p align="center">BULLY-BE-GONE!  PART I &#8211; <strong>WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A PARENT?</strong></p>
<p align="center">
<p>Not that I haven’t talked about this issue before, but, Hell’s Bells, readers, bullying is not only not going away, but, doesn’t it seem to you that it’s getting worse and worser?  I mean, a gang of bullies sets a teenager on fire!  And, in my area here, big kids are still beating on weaker kids; and when they get tired of beating on the weak, they recruit more bullies and attack the not-so-weak.</p>
<p>Fact is, bullying is an all too common form of violence in our society.  I’d estimate that over 30% of students are either bullies or victims.  And, parents, I could go into a lot more stats re bullying.  Its pernicious effects on both the victim and the bully. The psychological scars it leaves on the victim, scars that never, ever go away.</p>
<p>But, as a parent of a child who is getting bullied, do you really truly care about statistics?, I think not.  At least I wouldn’t.  <em>“Just tell me what the hell to do, Dickwad,” </em>is what I’d be saying.</p>
<p>So, okay, okay, I’ll tell you.  And I’ll start from the beginning, just in case you suspect something is awry, but you’re not sure what.  <strong>First of all, </strong>you need to <strong>be aware. </strong>Staying tuned in to your child is a big first step.  Don’t expect him or her to confide in you what is going on unless your child feels that you are tuned in and simpatico.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>BE AWARE AND SIMPATICO RE YOUR CHILD.</strong></li>
<li><strong>BE AWARE OF <span style="text-decoration: underline;">CHANGES IN HIS/HER ATTITUDE AND/OR BEHAVIOR. </span></strong>For instance, a child who <em>normally does well in school, maybe even enjoys going to school, suddenly becomes reluctant to go, maybe even gets withdrawn, depressed.  Stops doing homework.</em></li>
<li><strong>ASK COGENT QUESTIONS. </strong><em>Mayhap not straight out “Hey, are you getting bullied? questions, but questions that show an interest in what is really happening at school.  Who is she/he hanging with.  Try not to let the child get away with vague answers.</em></li>
<li><strong>ONCE YOUR SUSPICIONS ARE CONFIRMED </strong>(even if your child doesn’t <strong>clearly admit </strong>he/she is being bullied, but your suspicions are realistic, reasonable and based on an “educated intuition). <strong>CONTACT THE SCHOOL AND LET THEM KNOW.</strong></li>
<li><strong>TAKE ON THE ROLE OF YOUR CHILD’S <span style="text-decoration: underline;">SAFETY COACH. </span></strong><em>Trust me on this, you can teach your kid great counter bullying skills and techniques at home.  I do a great Bully Be Gone </em>class, but, even when I teach that course I let the parents know that my class cannot be truly effective unless they follow-up with some support at home.  Safety Caches can teach their child some really effective skills that have worked for other children, or <em>Would-Be Victims, including:</em></li>
</ol>
<ul>
<li><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">TOUGH TARGET ATTITUDES. </span></strong>Attitude is damn near everything when it comes to <strong>discouraging a bully </strong>from even choosing your child as a victim!  In the case where your child has already been a repetitive victim, this is going to be harder, but it can work.  TTA manifest themselves when you teach your child to:
<ul>
<li><strong>Walk/stride confidently, </strong>swinging your arms freely (the freer and more natural the swing the less fearful). Believe me or not, oftentimes, when you can get your child to physically mimic or replicate the attitudes and mannerisms of a Tough Target Kid, it actually inculcates and absorbs into the psyche of the youngster.  Your kid can actually convince him/herself, along with the potential bully, that he <strong>IS </strong>a Tough target Kid!</li>
<li><strong>Scan your environment with your eyes. </strong></li>
<li><strong>Stand Up For Yourself. </strong>Tell the bully, “Hey, I don’t appreciate what you just said.”</li>
<li><strong>LOOK BORED, DISINTERESTED, DEPRECIATE THE VERBAL ICON! </strong>Okay, so the bully needs to see <strong>fear </strong>in your child&#8217;s eyes.  Too bad for this numnutz.  Teach your child to <strong>Depreciate </strong>whatever the bully does or says.  By depreciating his/her words (The Verbal Icon) and/or actions, your child will be <strong>empowering him/herself while disempowering the Bully! </strong>Oftentimes, the bully will break off any planned attack.  Often, this might piss off the bully, but the child who seems disinterested and uneffected by the bully will put the bully back on his or her heels, and, all that needs too be done, is quickly distract the child, make a quick move, and get out of Dodge (see Part II).</li>
<li><strong>SOFT EYE CONTACT. </strong>See more in Part II, but Soft Eyes restricts eye contact to an invisible triangle from the upper cheeks to the chin.  This way your child can see any movements by the hands, arms, and torso.</li>
<li><strong>Don’t Let the Bully Back You Up. </strong>Teach your kid to <strong>protect his/her space. </strong>Do not allow the bully to invade his or her Personal Safe Zone (3-4’ in).  Teach your child to move diagonally (J-Step) to keep his or her space, but, at some point, it is up to your child to tell the bully to <em>“Stay back!”</em><strong> </strong></li>
<li><strong>VERBALIZE. </strong>The Bully, like many other predators, is seeking to find <em>fear </em>in your kid’s eyes.  The bully may be posturing for an audience to prop himself, his image, up.  If your child stays silent, the bully is spurred on.  Teach your kid to verbalize in three stages:<strong> </strong></li>
<li><strong>Ask. </strong>“Hey, Andy, c’mon,  How about letting me go to class.  We can do this later, if you still want.”<strong> </strong></li>
<li><strong>Tell:  “Andy, I </strong>don’t appreciate being called that.”<strong></strong></li>
<li><strong>Command.  “</strong>That’s it.  Get back.  Now!”<strong></strong></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<ul>
<li><strong>TEACH YOUR CHILD THE FIGHTING ARTS. </strong>Tune in for <strong>Part II, </strong>where I will talk about some reasonable and easily doable (as well as easy-to-teach) skills designed to <strong>Stop The Bully In His Tracks.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Until then, Stay Safe</strong></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">However, if you read my last post (<strong>Lust Or WPV?), </strong>you might be aware that homicide is the number one cause of death for women (in the workplace). <span> </span>You would also know that incidents of <strong>stalking, rape, sexual assault, </strong>and other types of violence are visited on women in alarmingly increasing numbers.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">My point:<span> </span>Even if she would have gone to the Yale lab with one or two friends, the perpetrator likely would have attempted to stalk, trap and attack Ms. Lee when she was alone and vulnerable.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span> </span>The Five Step </span></strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">is designed to <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">generate </span>voluntary compliance </strong>– as opposed to <strong>expecting </strong>compliance from workers, students and others based simply upon one’s position of authority.<span> </span>It is custom made to work positively against the negative center of a disruptive or difficult person/student.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;" align="center"><span style="font-family: Arial;">THE FIVE STEP</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;" align="center"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">STEP 1.<span> </span></span></span></strong><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span> </span><strong>ASK </strong>INSTEAD OF COMMAND.<span> </span>I believe it is axiomatic that difficult students/people are psychologically, physically, and philosophically incapable of doing what they are <strong>told to do.<span> </span></strong>Period.<span> </span>End of equation.<span> </span>However, research shows that 96% of difficult people <strong>will do what they are <span style="text-decoration: underline;">asked </span></strong>the first time they are asked.  Think of how you feel and how you often react when you are told tersely to do something and do it now.</span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">STEP 2.<span> </span>SET CONTEXT.<span> </span>EXPLAIN.<span> </span></span></strong><em><span style="font-family: Arial;">Often, you and other authority figures probably don’t feel it necessary to <strong>explain </strong>to a (subordinate) subject <strong>why you</strong> are commanding him or her to do something.<span> </span>Think of this for a second.<span> </span><strong>Why? </strong>Is <span style="text-decoration: underline;">the </span>central question in a democracy, and democracy was won the hard way a couple centuries ago by Difficult People who refused to do what they were told.<span> </span>Studies and empirical evidence proves that when <strong>asked </strong>to do something, and when asking fails, <strong>explains why, </strong>Difficult People will <span style="text-decoration: underline;">voluntarily comply </span>97% of the time.</span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">STEP 3.<span> </span>GIVE THE DIFFICULT PERSON OPTIONS.<span> </span></span></strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Every Difficult Person needs to perceive he or she has a say, one way or the other, in what happens to him/her.<span> </span><strong>98-99% </strong>of Difficult People will comply when asked to do something, when the reason for the “request” is explained, and, finally, when the authority figure (teacher, parent, security) <em>allows the perception that he or she has a choice.<span> </span></em>I always try to say something like, <em>“Sir, you have some good options here.<span> </span>You can (one or two <span style="text-decoration: underline;">good options), </span>or you can continue to rant and rave and you will give us no choice but to restrain you and escort you to lock-up.<span> </span>Dude, think about it.<span> </span>Do you really need that kind of problems today?<span> </span>It’s up to you&#8212;“<span> In the end, it&#8217;s always up to the disruptive person, or, at leasxt that&#8217;s the perception I wish to generate.</span></em></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">STEP 4.<span> </span>CONFIRM.<span> </span></span></strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">The objective of Step 4 is to confirm for the record that the person/student does not intend to comply.<span> </span>When you confirm for the record you are laying the foundation for any physical action you might be forced to use to attain control over the disruptive student/person.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;">“Jon, is there anything I can do or say to get you to go along with the program today? I sure hope so.”</span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;">You got to admit, the Confirmation Statement is both convincing and compelling.<span> </span>I have seen hardened gang- bangers drop their Tough Guy Act and actually comply, so stunned were they at an officer’s cool Confirmation.</span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;">But, in the case of the remaining 1%, there is always Step 5.</span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><em><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">STEP 5.<span> </span><span style="text-decoration: underline;">TAKE ACTION.<span> </span></span></span></strong><em><span style="font-family: Arial;">One of the primary reason the 5-Step Hard Style works so well, if you ask me, is that each independent and linear step is increasingly mind-numbing to the Difficult Person.<span> </span>Why?<span> </span>Most disruptive people/students – when they are in the midst of perpetrating mischief and mayhem, <strong>never, or maybe rarely </strong>expect the authority figure (teacher or officer)to be <strong>reasonable, respectful and/or nice!<span> </span></strong></span></em><span style="font-family: Arial;">And make no mistake about it, <em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">defusing a disruptive student is all about <strong>Being Nice!</strong></span></em></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><em><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="text-decoration: none;"> </span></span></span></em></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">But another reason the 5-Step works is the relentless truth that, at the end of the day, <strong>limits that have been set, options that have been given, and consequences that have been alluded to, must be enforced.<span> </span>So, </strong>after you ask the Confirmation Question and the doofus refuses to comply, you <strong>must take whatever action protocol or common sense calls for.</strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">And, if you are cringing because you detest using force, or, more likely, are concerned that the school district or work place will question your use of force and/or why you felt compelled to use it, let me do my best to put those worries to rest.<span> </span>The Five Step will give any teacher or security officer the most crucial element of any legal defense or questioning regarding his or her use of force.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">PRECLUSION.<span> </span></span></span></strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Which, simply put, means you can show, beyond a reasonable doubt, or at the very least, by a preponderance of the evidence that you did everything within your ability and power to <em>preclude </em>the use of force.<span> </span>You <strong>asked him/her nicely; </strong>you <strong>explained to the student why; </strong>you explained to the student what <strong>options he/she had (</strong>and the consequences for not choosing the compliant alternatives); and you confirmed nicely that he did not intend to comply.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">A week or so ago I talked about the various Primary and Secondary Targets that a potential victim can strike, kick, gouge or leverage, as well as our personal weapons we can use to win a life or death fight, or just to escape a scrape with your body intact.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>It occurred to me that maybe I should briefly elaborate one or two ways to most effectively do this.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Here are a few examples of how you can put an attacker down, if not out your own personal body parts.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span></p>
<div style="border-right: medium none; padding-right: 0in; border-top: medium none; padding-left: 0in; padding-bottom: 1pt; border-left: medium none; padding-top: 0in; border-bottom: windowtext 1.5pt solid;">

</div>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><strong><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">EYES<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">       </span></span></span></strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Hook fingers inside mandible and gouge either or both eyes using your thumbs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Will</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">                   </span>Result in the attacker immediately letting go of any body part he is holding and grabbing at his eyes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>This is a primary target, so, if you can follow up with another strike, you are almost always home free.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Another method is the <strong>Tiger Claw, </strong>which consists of crashing the heel of your palm into the subject’s chin and driving the head “off” his neck, following up by driving the fingers into his eyes.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> </span></p>
<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">NOSE<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">    </span></span><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Drive a Hammer Fist strike down onto the nose or drive a Palm Heel Strike up through the </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Blind Spot </span><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">that extends from his solar plexus to his nose into the nose.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Will cause great pain, an immediate debilitating watering of the eyes, and, usually, instant cessation of fighting.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Always follow up with a flurry of other strikes and kicks as his head drops.</span></span></h1>
<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></span></h1>
<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">CHIN<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">    </span></span><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">A strong Palm Heel Strike or Horizontal Elbow Strike will often stun an attacker.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>If you can drive the chin and jaw up toward the nose, you can do significant damage.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Once again, always follow up with other strikes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span></span></h1>
<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></span></h1>
<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: small;">THROAT<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">This is a Primary Target because a solid strike with even a glancing blow can put the Bad Guy quickly out of action.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Hit the throat with a </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Beak Strike, Web Strike, or with the Ridge hand.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Peruse past posts for more details and descriptions of these strikes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>A strike to the throat will prevent the Bad Guy from breathing and must be followed up with other merciless strikes.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Also, any </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Improvised Weapon, </span><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">such as a cell phone, paperback book, car keys, whatever, will work wonders if driven hard into the throat!</span></span></h1>
<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></span></h1>

<h1 style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></span></h1>
